UCSB Plaque & Stand
I made this sign as a personal project in my last quarter to serve as a reminder of my time as an undergraduate UCSB student. The sign was fabricated using a cnc mill and laser cutter, and the stand using a waterjet cutter. The coronavirus pandemic forced the design shops to close and prevented the completion of the project, but it was a valuable design and manufacturing experience regardless.
Purpose:
Going into my final quarter of university, I wanted something as a reminder of my time at UCSB. I have many memorable photos and videos but I felt like I was missing some physical reminder, especially to commemorate the engineering department. I decided that I would make some type of "UCSB" sign with the help of the engineering skills I picked up throughout the years.
Design:
Utilizing some scrap material from the machine shop, I decided to create a wooden sign and metal stand. The sign would feature "UCSB" text cut out of the center with some palm trees, the sun, and UCSB's Storke Tower mastered on the sides. The metal stand would be aluminum cut from a water jet, and bend down the middle with a bending machine.
Implementation:
The actual manufacturing did not go as smooth as the design. When CNC milling the wood block, I had not secured the block well enough to the tooling table causing it to slide and ruin the design. I turned the block over and started the process over on the back side, but unfortunately didn't get to finish because of Covid. I was able to cut out my aluminum stand, create a bend down the middle, and even CNC engrave my name into it before the lab got shut down though.
